WWA Awards 42 Scholarships for 2009-10

Released: May 11, 2009

The Washburn Women’s Alliance (WWA) held its annual scholarship luncheon on Monday, May 11, 2009. Forty-two students were awarded over $80,000 in scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year, representing the largest number of recipients and the most scholarship dollars ever awarded.

A group of volunteers came together to form WWA in 1995 in response to a request from Washburn University to meet the needs of non-traditional female students. Non-traditional students normally attend college on a part-time basis (six to nine hours per semester) due to work and family commitments. The majority of scholarships available at Washburn require enrollment in at least 12 hours, making non-traditional students ineligible.  Since 1995, nearly $446,000 has been awarded to 223 women; of that number, 104 have graduated from Washburn University.

This year’s luncheon speakers were Lori R. Fisher of Heart of America Hospice and Jessica Wendt, Washburn student and WWA scholarship recipient. Both shared their personal journey and commitment to education.

The 42 scholarship donors and 14 table sponsors were also recognized at the luncheon. Proceeds from the luncheon go to support the Washburn Women’s Alliance Endowment for future scholarships.
